The 1st Ursuline Prep Summer Concert showcased the talents of the pupils across a wide range of areas. It was a truly sensational night supported by teachers, friends and family. Many of the teachers are offering a free trial lesson to encourage more participants from September. Please fill in the attached form and hand in to the main office if your child is interested.
The concert began with a fantastic performance from the school choir. Led by Mrs Ewington and Mrs Sales they performed a Sound of Music Medley, Walk them bones and I believe I can fly (which they performed when they won the Stratford Festival earlier this year). Choir members are from Years 3-6 and rehearse on a Thursday after school.
Pupils at the school have the opportunity to learn a range of instruments which were showcased at the concert. Bill Yeomans teaches Woodwind and his pupils Mitodru and Adwaitha played the flute whilst Cassidy played the Saxophone. Megan Hill teaches the violin and we were lucky enough to hear duets from Kieran and Peyton and Amarah and Shivani. Chafic also played a solo piece for us.
The pupils learning the piano were able to show their skills on the Academy’s grand piano. Jenna, Larelle, Phoebe and Anisha were able to show what they had been learning in their lessons with Neale Ridding this year. Finally, Mr Harding and the guitarists, Aryan, Dylan and Jonathon performed two pieces from the modern era accompanied by Neha, Cassidy and Hadi on vocals.
New to the school this academic year the Bollywood dancers demonstrated the hand gestures and their meanings before performing a piece as a group. Bollywood dancing rehearse on a Monday after school.
Having taught in the school since its opening Kathleen Maguire and her Irish dancers demonstrated jigs and reels including a four hand reel. Irish dancing lessons take place on a Thursday lunch time.
Performing two pieces (Singing Together and Africa) that were included in the programme for the concert at the O2 in February, the Young Voices choir also performed a Gospel Train Medley learnt especially for the concert. The next concert will be in February 2020!
The ballet dancers from Nursery, Reception, KS1 and KS2 showcased the pieces that they had been working on through the year. Ballet lessons take place on a Wednesday – please see the office for further details.
Speech and Drama
A selection of Year 4 & 6 pupils shared two poems about school life with us. This demonstrates what the lessons are focused on; building confidence and being able to project their voices clearly and loudly. The pupils are currently awaiting their results from the LAMDA examinations taken in March. Speech and drama lessons take place throughout the day on a Tuesday.
Since joining the school in September, Mr Agyemang has shared his own talent for dancing with KS2. The pupils rehearse after school on a Tuesday with the club proving so popular it even has a waiting list. The pupils worked hard to remember the many steps and to ensure that they were as together as possible.
The lyrics in the song ‘Singing a Thankful Song’ describe perfectly what makes the Ursuline a special place to learn. We are a community who comes together to celebrate our similarities and strengths but also our differences and uniqueness. The pupils have been learning the song since before Easter to share this message with parents and others outside the school community.
