In our nursery our first priority is to make sure every child feels happy, secure and involved. We have a wonderful team of professional teaching staff who love what they do. Children find learning fun and make excellent progress throughout their time in the school.
The school has a wonderful diversity of cultures and the children benefit enormously from this environment.
Helping parents to manage the demands of their busy lives is a priority at our Nursery and we include a great deal of pre and post school care within the fees. We also run a holiday club, giving you full support and peace of mind.
Head of Early Years
To live and learn in harmony,
Caring for each other;
Treating everybody as a sister and a brother;
Reflecting Christ’s actions and His message too,
By striving for excellence in all that we do.
Our aims and values
- To provide a safe, secure and welcoming environment for all children, parents, staff and visitors to the school.
- To offer to all children and staff the experience of working in a Christian community which finds its inspiration in Christ and His gospel, whilst recognising and respecting the freedom of individuals to worship God according to the practices of their own religion.
- To recognise each child’s unique value and giftedness and enable them to develop a positive self-image.
- To establish close links between home and school which will benefit the all-round development of the child.
- To enable children to use, learn from and build onto existing knowledge and experience.
- To provide a broad, balanced curriculum which promotes the full academic, personal, physical, social, emotional and spiritual development of the individual child.
- To encourage children to become independent learners by building on their curiosity and desire to learn and so develop their skills, concepts and understanding
- To prepare each child for the secondary school of which they are most suited.
Happy and confident
We recognise that every child has different needs and abilities. We support and nurture each individual to ensure they are engaged in ways that will help them to develop and learn. Children often work together in small groups and are involved in one to one activities. Working together we help children to develop their social skills and to learn how to interact and respond in a way that is both kind and considerate.
Having fun is an important part of school life and much of our learning is done through play. We have many activities which the children can choose from, which includes inside and outside learning. All the equipment is kept down at the children’s level so they can reach them and help to put them away. We encourage each child to take on responsibilities at an early stage and to help their teachers to clear up and organise activities.
Our Nursery is full of music. The children enjoy experimenting with musical instruments and love to sing and dance. They take part in the KS1 Nativity at Christmas, as well as assemblies, when appropriate.
For many children English is their second language, while others may not speak English when they first join the Nursery. Children are incredibly quick to learn and begin to understand and speak English within a short time. By using gestures and body language, early communication is made fun.
Most of the children who attend our Nursery will go on to the Prep School. Their time at the Nursery prepares them for the step-up to the Prep School’s Reception class and makes the transition easy.
At our Nursery we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum, including the seven areas of learning, as well as teaching religious education. Learning is made fun and much of our teaching is delivered through child initiated activities, as well as adult-led activities. Children start learning letters and sounds with their own name cards. They learn their alphabet and letter sounds, using Jolly Phonics, before moving onto early reading, if appropriate.
The children enjoy regular story-times, listening to their teachers read and exploring words and ideas together. Every child receives one to one attention to help them develop skills in English and Maths. Using interactive whiteboards we can use modern programmes to help keep learning fun and engaging.
We use labels with pictures and words throughout the Nursery. Images help to remind children of appropriate conduct and signpost areas such as the library, dressing up area and the washrooms. We also put labels on some of the objects around the Nursery to help children with letter sounds and language.
Nursery is such a wonderful time of adventure and development for children. It’s a time of life that should be treasured. Every child at our Nursery creates their own special online Learning Journey, called Tapestry. It is a link with home, where parents can see regular updates of what their child is learning at Nursery, through observations and photographs. Parents can also upload photographs of special events or outings, which take place at home, for your child to share with the class. It is a lovely keepsake, of your child’s early years, when so much learning takes place.
Before and after school care
Managing a busy family life and balancing the demands of work is a challenge that many parents face. At the Ursuline Prep Nursery we provide early morning care from 7.30am and after school care until 6.30pm as part of the fees.
Outside of term time we run a holiday club from 7.30am to 6.30pm for an additional 11 weeks, thereby covering parents for 48 weeks of the year.
We provide a healthy breakfast for our early arrivals and they enjoy lots of activities in breakfast club.
If children are staying for the after school club, we provide a healthy tea to keep them going until they get home. Art and craft activities are very popular and the children can enjoy playing in our completely secure outdoor area.
Healthy, tasty meals
All the meals are cooked in the school kitchens by our chef and his team. There is always a good selection of hot and cold food, all of which is freshly prepared on the premises. Mealtimes are an enjoyable part of the day. We ensure the children understand and display good manners; this helps to create a calm environment and a pleasant time for the children to relax and refuel! Throughout the day we ensure they have plenty of water to drink and a regular supply of fresh fruit.
Happy, safe and secure
Our priority is to ensure all the children in our care are happy and feel safe and secure within their environment. Many of the children come to us from different cultures and backgrounds, which brings a wonderful diversity and energy to the school. During their time at the Nursery the children develop their abilities in reading, writing and arithmetic following the early years curriculum. They explore the world around them and learn about different cultures and religions. We find interesting and fun ways to explore new ideas and make sure there’s always plenty of time to play. The children build lasting friendships and develop social skills, both of which form a lasting foundation for their move up to Reception.
